Barber’s String Quartet is most known for the Adagio movement, employed widely in movies. British composer Frank Bridge’s music is an amalgam of German and French traditions. Le Tombeau de Couperin is Ravel’s homage to the great French Baroque composer François Couperin. Bernstein’s final work, the Dance Suite for brass quintet, opens this heartfelt program.

Sarasota Orchestra Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero delves into Mozart’s music for smaller ensembles, as he leads the strings in the iconic Eine kleine Nachtmusik, the opening of which is immediately recognizable the world over. The winds, brass, and timpani join in the fun for the Serenade No. 9, nicknamed “Posthorn” because of a solo for the brass instrument.

André Previn’s Four Outings for Brass is a jazzy suite with each movement featuring a different instrument. Eugène Bozza wrote a large volume of music for winds. His Variations sur un thème libre is a melodic work offering the winds a chance to shine. Alexander Borodin's warmly passionate String Quartet No. 2 is a perennial favorite.
