Larger Forces
Friday Festival 2
Revel in this program featuring works for larger ensembles. Two international superstar Festival Faculty members, flutist Carol Wincenc and cellist Desmond Hoebig, join eight Festival Fellows for a performance of the rarely-heard Dixtuor by Jean Francaix. Written for string and wind quintets, the piece bubbles with the charm and wittiness for which Francaix is known best. Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-flat Major for double string quartet, completed when the composer was only 16, is one of the most beloved pieces of chamber music ever written. The award-winning Pacifica Quartet is joined by four Festival Fellows for a performance of the work which has been called “one of the miracles of nineteenth-century music.” Finally, Festival Music Director Jeffrey Kahane joins the Pacifica Quartet for a performance of Brahms’ monumental Piano Quintet in F Minor, which Brahms’ friend Hermann Levi called “a restorative for every music lover – a masterpiece of chamber music.”
