The music of Grammy Award winning American composer Joan Tower opens this rich program. Tower’s Red Maple, for bassoon and string orchestra, features faculty bassoonist Peter Kolkay, one of the commissioners of the work, accompanied by the Festival Orchestra under the direction of Jeffrey Kahane.  The program continues with Brahms’ Sextet No. 1 for strings, featuring SMF faculty and fellows in a work that marked one of the composer’s earliest successes. Faculty clarinetist Eli Eban will perform Leó Weiner’s homage to Hungarian folk dance. The concert concludes with Dvořák’s evergreen Piano Quintet, featuring the Calidore String Quartet and Jeffrey Kahane at the piano.
