Calidore String Quartet

Artist Showcase 2

June 11, 2020

Thursday | 4:30 pm | Holley Hall
Price Range $31 - $41
Duration 87 minutes with intermission

The Festival welcomes the electrifying Calidore String Quartet as guest ensemble. Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2020, the Quartet features two SMF alumni. Their performance of the Mendelssohn Quartet in F Minor, written in memory of his sister Fanny, will conclude this program. The concert opens with faculty cellist Brinton Smith and Music Director Jeffrey Kahane in a performance of one of the final chamber works by Debussy. Faculty flutist Carol Wincenc will perform Goldenrod by Sato Matsui, a work written expressly for Wincenc.  The piece is an exquisite blend of the composer’s Japanese heritage and American energy.  A magical piano quartet by Caroline Shaw, the youngest-ever recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music, and two poetic miniatures for horn and piano fill out the program.
