During the second half of Beethoven’s lifetime, a period that witnessed the final flowering of the Classical period and the birth of Romanticism in music, a generation was born that comprised a staggering number of musical geniuses.  Between the years 1797 and 1813, Schubert, Berlioz, Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn, Robert and Clara Schumann, Chopin, Liszt, and Wagner were all born. It was also a time of exceptional political and social ferment that began shaking the very foundations of European civilization and radically transformed the world, laying the groundwork for modernity. Only a few years after Beethoven’s death, Johannes Brahms was born, filling out a group of composers who created an astoundingly rich and varied body of musical work that would change the course of music history, although in many different ways.

Some of these composers developed life-long friendships, some became rivals, but nearly every one touched the life and work of every other in some form. Festival Music Director Jeffrey Kahane offers a lecture focusing on the close ties between the Schumanns and Brahms, but also weaving into the picture their vibrant professional and personal connections with the other great Romantics, and the various ways in which they not only carried on Beethoven’s legacy, but also renewed and reinvented it.

Kahane's presentation, including musical examples played at the piano, as well as rare recordings of interviews with artists who lived into the 20th century and knew some of the key figures from this remarkable group of great musicians, will provide a panoramic view of one of the most astonishing eras in the history of music.
