Principal Keyboard

First year with SO: 1991

Hometown: Leksand, Sweden

Instrument: With the help of Jeffrey Kahane, the Orchestra found a beautiful new Steinway concert grand in Los Angeles last year. It seems to be settling in nicely here in Holley Hall, and it is becoming better every minute it is lovingly played!

Doctor of Musical Arts – State University of New York at Stony Brook

Jonathan Spivey grew up in Sweden and began playing piano at the age of 5. He took lessons in Stockholm with Stig Ribbing and Lars Roos, and gave performances in Drottningholm Theatre and in Trondheim, Norway. Jonathan was a National finalist in the Music Teachers National Association auditions. Jonathan studied with Martin Canin in New York. Jonathan has given concert appearances in Carnegie's Weill Hall, Seoul, Korea, Melbourne, FL, and Kansas City, MO. Jonathan is also the pianist in the Sarasota Piano Quartet and the organist at Church of the Palms in Sarasota.

Outside of music, Jonathan enjoys ice hockey, trips to Sweden, strong coffee, and watching his kids do amazing things.

Career Highlights:
Some of Jonathan's favorite musical moments include appearing with Sarasota Young Voices in Notre Dame (Paris, France... and Montreal, Quebec) and performing in Dublin, London, and New Orleans.

Literally gripping the arms of my seat, I was not the only one propelled on this rollercoaster of delightful music.

Every section and soloist within the orchestra played their role with strength and beauty; every tree proud and tall. Tali served as an excellent guide leading the forces with assured confidence. The overall sound was lush and, yes, intense just where it needed to be.

A lifetime of musical moments, cinematic in scope, gave every section of the orchestra a leading role at one time or another. Chief among them was the virtuosic solo of concertmaster Daniel Jordan.

Andrew Lane, the Orchestra’s Principal Pops Conductor, knows how to program a winning event and this concert had something for everyone. It also brought in a whole new audience that seemed dazzled by the performances.

The Sarasota Orchestra played a program this past weekend filled with so much color, it was like visiting the Louvre.
