First Season with SO: 1989

Carmen currently plays flute with the Sarasota Orchestra, Charlottesville Opera in the summer, and extra/substitute with the Florida Orchestra and Orlando Philharmonic. Previously she played extra/substitute with the Oklahoma Symphony.

She began playing the flute at age 7  taking lessons from her dad, Harry T. Newell, who was a life-long professional musician. Later she studied with Carl Hall (piccoloist with the Atlanta Symphony), Martha Rearick, Keith Bryan, Christine Smith and Peter Lloyd. She was a member of the flute group inspired by the flutist Trevor Wye called "Wyes Guys", later renamed "Tour de Flute" which performed at various National Flute Conventions, but also toured Mexico.

Various past summer activities have included playing Principal Piccolo with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Mineria in Mexico City for 8 summers with 9 weeks each of back to back Masterworks programs. She also played with the  Crested Butte Music Festival, extra with the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder, with both Giora Bernstein and Michael Christie as conductors, Alaska Festival of Music with Reiner Miedel, conductor of the Seattle Symphony, and was the flute teacher at the Alaska Fine Arts Camp in Wasilla Alaska. Other teaching positions have included several universities in Oklahoma and also was appointed to a one year teaching position filling in during a sabbatical at both the University of Oklahoma and University of South Florida.

She performed with the Dresden Philharmonic from Germany on their Florida tour and has recorded chamber music on Dorian records with former Dallas Symphony conductor, Eduardo Mata, also on O.M. Records with Orquesta Sinfonica de Mineria, Luis Herrera de la Fuente, conductor and on Azica Records with the Florida Orchestra -Jahja Ling, conductor.

Carmen took part in numerous masterclasses with Julius Baker but also with Geoffrey Gilbert, Marcel Moyse, William Bennett and James Galway, among others.

Her favorite activities are spending time with her children and traveling. She is married to John Bannon-timpanist with the Florida Orchestra.
