First Season with SO: 1993

Betsy Hudson Traba grew up in the Cleveland suburb of Mentor, Ohio where she began playing the flute at age 10 in an extraordinary public school music program. She continued her studies at Baldwin Wallace College where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree as a student of William Hebert and Jeffrey Khaner, followed by a Master of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music as a student of Julius Baker. Following graduate school, she moved to Germany where she served for 3 seasons as the Principal Flute of the Hofer Symphoniker in Hof, Bavaria.  In November of 1993 she began her tenure as Principal Flutist of the Sarasota Orchestra. In addition to her performance duties for the Orchestra, Betsy has served multiple terms as a leader of the Sarasota Orchestra Player's Association.  She maintains an active teaching studio working with flute students from age 9-90 and has created the "Symphonic Life" series of courses on orchestral music and musicians for the Pierian Spring Adult Education Academy. She is married to Sarasota Orchestra Principal Bassoonist Fernando Traba, and they have two teenage daughters who are both nationally ranked competitive swimmers. When she is not driving kids to and from pre-dawn swim practices, she enjoys gardening, languages and wine.
