Pianist Angie Zhang, who was one of the shining stars among the 2019 Festival fellows, presents a program of music written in homage to other artists. Clara Schumann managed to maintain a busy career as a pianist and composer while running a household and bearing eight children. She wrote her luminousVariations on a Theme of Robert Schumann as a loving birthday gift for her husband. Caroline Shaw's work Gustave le Grey was inspired by Chopin's exquisite Op. 17 A Minor Mazurka.  Shaw calls the work a "multi-layered portrait" of Chopin's work, using some of his "ingredients" hinged together by her own. Dedicated to a pupil and friend, Chopin's Piano Sonata, Op. 58 was the final sonata he composed, and is considered one of the artistic summits of 19th century piano music. Hailed by the New York Concert Review as "warmly expressive, sensitive and polished," Zhang returns to Sarasota and brings her breathtaking artistry to this inventive program.
