The 2021 Sarasota Music Festival opens with classic elegance and bold virtuosity as violinist Angelo Xiang Yu and pianist Feng Niu collaborate on a program of Mozart, Britten, and Beethoven. A warm and sunny work, the Violin Sonata K. 301 saw Mozart elevate the violin to an equal partnership with the piano for the first time, and the world never looked back. Britten composed his Suite for Violin and Piano at age 21; biographer Michael Kennedy deems the suite “the last of what one might call Britten’s prentice instrumental works,” containing “glimpses of the mature artist... fluent and intelligent—and capable, though still shy, of emotional warmth.” In 1801 Beethoven was enjoying a period of relative happiness, and it shows in his glorious “Spring" Sonata, Op. 24, No. 5. Perhaps the most popular of his ten sonatas for violin and piano, it has a lyricism and gentility that earned its moniker. Yu has served on the faculty of SMF since 2018. The newest member of the Shanghai String Quartet, he has been heard worldwide in recital and as a soloist with major orchestras. Do not miss this opportunity to experience his artistry in the intimate setting of Holley Hall or online as SMF launches its reimagined 2021 season.
