Fanny Mendelssohn

Artist Showcase 3

June 20, 2019

Thursday | 4:30 pm | Holley Hall
Tickets from $29 | Seat Layout

Felix Mendelssohn’s older sister Fanny was born 100 years too early. Despite being acknowledged as her brother’s equal as both a pianist and composer, she was forbidden from making a career in music. In this Artist Showcase program, we pay tribute to her formidable musical gifts with a performance of her Piano Trio in D Minor, which her family published only after her death, having prohibited her from publishing it during her lifetime. The program begins with Beethoven’s sprightly String Trio in G Major, which the 28-year old Beethoven considered one of his best compositions to that point in his career. The grand Sextet for Piano and Winds by romantic composer Ludwig Thuille provides a rich, almost symphonic interlude in this delightful program.
