Great things come in small packages. Mozart's Piano Quartet No. 2 imports the brilliance of his piano concertos into the intimate world of chamber music.  It is sparkling, soaring and melodious. Ligeti's Six Bagatelles for Wind Quintet, originally composed for piano, packs the emotional intensity and expressive breadth of an entire symphony into short segments, none lasting longer than three minutes. Shostakovich's Piano Trio No. 2—which Festival Director Jeffrey Kahane calls "one of the most important chamber works of the 20th century"—is a memorial both to a close friend and to the victims of the Holocaust. Its themes are based on Jewish folk songs and are profoundly moving.
