Artist Showcase 2

June 13, 2019

Thursday | 4:30 pm | Holley Hall
Tickets from $29 | Seat Layout

This program opens with two works for winds written late in life by venerable artists. The Sonata for Oboe and Piano by Francis Poulenc was the last work the French master wrote. Its elegiac last movement is frequently viewed as a farewell to life by the composer. Johannes Brahms had ceased composing and written his will when he heard the playing of a gifted clarinetist and his creative spark rekindled. The Clarinet Trio in A Minor is the first of four great chamber works he would write featuring the clarinet. Finally, Musical America's 2009 "Ensemble of the Year," the Pacifica Quartet, will perform the last of the three famed "Razumovsky" Quartets of Beethoven. Written during the prime of the composer's career and dedicated to his patron, Russian ambassador to Vienna Count Andreas Razumovsky, the String Quartet No. 9 in C Major brings the program to a fiery and dramatic close.
