The Sarasota Music Festival’s opening program begins with one of Schubert’s stormiest works, featuring the Calidore String Quartet, hailed for their “irrepressible dramatic instinct” (The New York Times). Faculty clarinetist Franklin Cohen performs in his own arrangement of a selection of Schubert’s art songs, a potent blend of poetry and musical storytelling. Grammy-nominated flutist and composer Valerie Coleman’s Amazonia, performed by faculty flutist Carol Wincenc (also a Grammy nominee), evokes the lush greenery and lively sounds of a rainforest. The program concludes with Beethoven’s sunny Piano Trio No. 1, the young master’s first published work.
