The Chamber Soirée season opens with two highly contrasting, 20th-century masterpieces. Shostakovich wrote his Eighth String Quartet in just three days in 1960. He dedicated the work to "all the victims of fascism and war." Ravel’s 1903 quartet was inspired by the music of Debussy. Its gentle melodies and rich sonorities evoke a peaceful optimism.
