Beethoven's "Emperor" Concerto is a majestic masterpiece. Hailed at its Leipzig premiere as "one of the most original, imaginative... but also one of the most difficult of all concertos," you will be awed by its grandeur. Pianist Joyce Yang, critically acclaimed as "the most gifted young pianist of her generation" with a "million-volt stage presence," is an ideal interpreter of this mighty concerto. Estonian composer Veljo Tormis's Overture No. 2 is a percussive work with powerful finale that reflects on life under Soviet rule. Prokofiev's lavish masterpiece, the famous Romeo and Juliet, is a testament of orchestral power. From the stately procession of the Montagues and Capulets, to the innocent romance of the young lovers, and ending with the transcendent music of Juliet's final sacrifice, this eternal testament to the power of love will move you. Conducting this exhilarating concert is Anu Tali, returning for an encore of her 2011 concert that lit up Sarasota. One review described Tali as "deceptively petite, she displayed the energy of a Baltic fireball." The Herald-Tribune review of her Sarasota Orchestra performance raved that it was "nothing short of stunning, bringing the audience in the sold-out [hall] to their feet repeatedly."
