First symphonies and concerti frequently hold special meaning to composers. These two firsts by Brahms and Sibelius are intense adventures. Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1 is a giant among piano concerti. Born out of personal emotional conflict, the work is both heroic and tragic. Lukáš Vondráček, winner of the 2016 International Queen Elizabeth Piano Competition, will take on this formidable and beloved concerto. Sibelius's First Symphony is a patriotic tribute to his homeland of Finland. The work features an incredibly rich tone palette that is both expansive and intimate.
